In this section of the website, you will find information on projects that are long term. I'll pass out the directions, paperwork, etc. that the students need to refer to for the different projects in class. Please note the subheadings under this page: Book reports, Whale research paper, and mission building.
BOOK REPORTS:
1. FICTION - BOOK BAG PROJECT DUE SEPTEMBER 28TH
Directions:
Choose a fictional book of your choice that is at your readability level. As you read the book, make a list of interesting objects that are important to the story. For example, in Cinderella, the list might include: the slipper, the pumpkin, the clock, a carriage, and the mice.
Choose 5 of the objects on your list. Draw a picture of each or find a real example. For instance, if one of the objects is a key, you might use a real key instead of drawing a picture of one.
Put all of the objects into a bag.
WRITTEN SUMMARY: Please write a summary of what the book was about. This need not be longer than one hand written page. A summary doesn't get into the fine details of the book. It's an overview of the plot, setting, and characters in the book. You can then use this written summary to prepare for your oral presentation of the book.
PRESENTATION: Give a short introduction that gives the book’s title and author. You will then give a BRIEF summary of what the book is about. A minute to a minute and a half is about the right length of time you should talk. Memorizing this is ALWAYS better than having to stand up there and read it to us. As you talk, bring out the objects one at a time as they fit into your summary. You will be graded on: voice projection, creativity of the objects shown, eye contact with the audience, and a clear, organized summary.
Rubric for the Book Bag Presentation:
4 – the introduction gives title and author and a thorough summary
the speaker’s main points are clear, organized, and were memorized
the speaker consistently maintains eye contact with the audience
the speaker’s voice is very strong and clear
visual aides are creative, clear, and easy to see
3 - the introduction gives title and author and most of the main ideas
the speaker’s main points could use more organization and were read
the speaker generally maintains eye contact with the audience
the speaker’s voice is mostly strong and clear
visual aides are adequate but some lack creativity
2 - the introduction is incomplete and was read
the speaker lacks details and presents unnecessary information
the speaker reads presentation with minimal eye contact
the speaker’s voice is frequently weak and hard to hear
visual aides are difficult to see and lack creativity
1 - the introduction and summary are missing
the speaker lacks organization
the speaker reads presentation with no eye contact
the speaker’s voice is barely audible
